04.11 : Nita's Hideaway : Tempe, AZ - w / Fightshy & Grand Canyon State

{ TODAY'S PICS }

By the time I get to Phoenix ... Adam, the promoter of last night's show woke us this morning bearing breakfast burritos - half chorizo and half green chili. I climbed off the futon in the kitchen and grabbed me a green chili and potato burrito. It was 8:20am and we have a nine hour drive to Phoenix ahead. We got ready as quickly as possible and headed off at about ten.

The drive from Santa Fe to Phoenix is really beautiful. You get to drive West through the alien planet terrain and red deserts of New Mexico, over the Continental Divide, through the mountains of Northern Arizona, and down through the cactus-striped deserts of Phoenix's outskirts. See, I just took you through a nine-hour drive in one paragraph. You're welcome. We didn't have the same luxury.

Phoenix is hot. How come nobody warned us. I didn't think it would be warm in Arizona. Damn, it was like eighty degrees. Yowza. We headed to the club to sound check and relax for a while.

The show went well. My friends Jen and Wendy showed up at around nine and there were a lot of people there to see the first two bands. Fightshy were a band that broke up about eight months ago and this was their first show since the breakup. Grand Canyon State are a four-piece, radio friendly rock band whose first show was tonight. I met Jeff and Chris from Reuben's Accomplice and talked with Chris for a while. He was a great guy and Reuben's Accomplice have some shows with The Promise Ring coming up, those lucky bastards. We played last and although the room had cleared a bit the crowd seemed enthusiastic. Chris, the bassist of Grand Canyon State reintroduced himself as the bassist from Pollen and currently The Stereo, who we played with last year. Hey, buddy. We were invited to stay at my friend Wendy's house, right downtown and a block away from Modified where we play tomorrow night.

We loaded out and drove to Filibertos - my favorite drive-thru 24 hour Mexican taco hut in Tempe. We picked up some burritos and drove for a half an hour to Wendy's house. Everything is sooo far away from everything else in the Phoenix area. Wendy's apartment was really nice and the AC was refreshing. We gobbled our burritos up and I was happy to hang out with Jen for a while. Wendy slept in her roommates bed so that we would have a spare bed and I grabbed it. I proceeded to get the best sleep I've had in thirty days. Thanks, Wendy.
